COLUMBIA, TN (WSMV) -

A Maury County sheriff's deputy has died from his injuries after a car accident Friday morning.

Jimmy Tennyson was driving on Iron Bridge Road when witnesses say he lost control, overcorrected and ended up about 35 feet off the road down an embankment hitting a tree.

Right now, Tennessee Highway Patrol is investigating what caused Tennyson to lose control, while the community mourns his death.

One of Tennyson's closest friends, Sam Barnes, knew him for more than 20 years. He says Jimmy Tennyson was a loving man, who cared about the people he served.

“I'm going to miss him, every day,” said Barnes. “He was such a kind and gentle man, and a part of my daily life.”

Barnes started at the Maury County Sheriff's Department in 1995. Back then, he worked in the jail with Tennyson.

“He was the old guy on shift, but he was super nice to everybody, everybody respected him,” said Barnes.

Barnes now works with the Williamson County Sheriff's Department, but says he talked on the phone with Tennyson every day.

Tennyson worked with the Maury County Sheriff's Department for more than 20 years. He most recently worked as a School Resource Officer for McDowell Elementary School. At the school, black and blue ribbons line the parking spot where Tennyson would park his squad car.

At the Maury County Sheriff's Department, the flags are at half-staff in honor of their lost brother.

Visitation will be held on Monday, May 8 from 3-8pm at Heritage Funeral Home. A celebration of life funeral service will be held on Tuesday, May 9 at 3pm at South Gate Church of Christ.
