NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

President Barack Obama has declared a major disaster after last month’s deadly wildfires in East Tennessee, making federal funding available to those affected.

Federal assistance includes grants for temporary housing and home repairs, loans to cover uninsured property losses, and other programs to aid individuals and business owners.

Federal funding is also available to state and local governments, as well as certain nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work in Sevier County.

FEMA is still surveying the damage from the wildfires. More counties and additional forms of assistance may be designated once their assessments are complete.

Fourteen people were killed and more than 2,500 homes and businesses were destroyed when the wildfires spread rapidly in Gatlinburg on Nov. 28. Two juveniles face aggravated arson charges for allegedly starting the fire that led to the deadly wildfire.

The wildfires caused an estimated $500 million in damage.
