NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Gov. Bill Haslam has launched a new campaign to find forever families for children in foster care.

More than 6,000 children are currently in Tennessee’s foster care system.

Haslam will team up with other organizations to encourage more Tennesseans to become foster parents.

The goal is to find 100 more homes for foster children over the next nine months. Haslam said that will take government and people coming together.

“We’re better at fixing potholes than hearts,” the governor said. “Hard situations like tornadoes and bus wrecks and wildfires, we’re handicapped without people who have an eternal sense of purpose.”

For the 6,000 children currently in foster care, there are nearly 8,000 currently in state custody with the Department of Children’s Services.
