Singing a tribute to Johnny and June Carter Cash fits Mary Sarah’s old soul country music style.

Sarah is only 21 but enlisted some classic names to step up and sing duets on her album Bridges.

“They did. I know, I even say that to myself. They sang with me, it’s crazy,” Sarah said.

Some of the songs are three times older than her.

“I just fell in love with this music and appreciated where it came from,” Sarah said.

Country music’s masters already appreciate where she came from and her persistence. Sarah was on stage in Texas at age 10 and on a nationwide tour by 12.

“Forty-eight cities,” she said. “It was quite amazing. Pretty surreal at 12 years old to be touring. Little different looking back now. Not a lot of 12-year-olds do that.”

Sarah finished fifth last year on NBC’s The Voice. She is now back every Monday for the next few weeks.

It’s all part of creating a career where Sarah believes heart is as important as voice in the end.

“It’s OK if the note isn’t perfect, as long as there’s passion behind it and they see that. I think it makes a world of a difference,” Sarah said.
