MOUNT JULIET, TN (WSMV) -

A man is in jail following a police pursuit of a stolen car by Mt. Juliet Police Saturday evening.

Cedric Hayes, 25, of Hermitage was charged with theft of property, motor vehicle theft and felony evading, among other charges.

According to Lt. Tyler Chandler of the Mt. Juliet Police Department, officers attempted to stop a shoplifting-in-progress at the Walmart at 300 Pleasant Grove around 4:17 p.m. The man was stuffing clothing under his own clothes.

Upon arrival, officers attempted to stop the suspect’s car that was fleeing the scene. Officers were immediately alerted on their computer that the car was stolen.

They pursued the car after it blew out both driver-side tires while crossing a raised median in an attempt to escape.

The car became disabled on Interstate 40 West near the 223 mile-marker. Hayes, the driver and only occupant of the car, jumped out and ran.

Hayes jumped the center dividing wall, ran across eastbound lanes and into a wood line. Officers quickly apprehended him.

Further investigation revealed a stolen handgun, marijuana, pills believed to be Xanax and stolen merchandise in the car.

Police say the vehicle the suspect was driving was stolen out of Nashville on Nov. 19. The handgun recovered from the car was also stolen during a robbery in Nashville on July 22.

Hayes’ full list of charges include:

  • Theft of Property – Shoplifting
  • Driving on a Revoked Driver’s License – 4th Offense
  • Felony Evading
  • Misdemeanor Evading
  • Reckless Endangerment
  • Motor Vehicle Theft

  • Unlawful for Felon to be in Possession of a Handgun
  • Possession of a Schedule VI (Marijuana) Drug with Intent to Distribute
  • Possession of a Schedule VI (Pills)
  • Criminal Impersonation

Chandler also said the suspect left two women and three children at Walmart as officers approached him. Hayes is the only one being charged at the moment.
