Group spends Thanksgiving helping fellow veterans

Posted: Updated:

A group of Middle Tennessee veterans spent Thanksgiving night outside trying to help their brothers and sisters in arms.

This is the third year of Veterans for Veterans. The group started at 6 p.m. Thursday and will go until 6 p.m. Saturday to help their fellow veterans.

“It got about 50. It wasn’t too bad until we had the mist start coming in, and then it was almost like rain because it was really heavy,” said Mark Jolly, sergeant at arms of the U.S. Military Vets Motorcycle Club of Murfreesboro. “But tonight it’s really supposed to be cold, about 27.”

But the group’s cause is keeping them warm.

The veterans are raising awareness and collecting money, food, clothing, and furniture for military veterans who are homeless or making the adjustment to civilian life.

“We want to give the veteran a hand up, not a hand out,” Jolly said.

They are helping veterans like Jeffrey Bolls, who planned a life at sea.

“I was on track to a full 20 years and a situation happened and I had to be medically separated,” Bolls said.

After nine years in the Navy, Bolls had two heart attacks. He now has a heart monitor and is learning to lead a new life with his wife and two daughters.

“There’s all kinds of people here helping us, and then veterans out here, they’ve helped us out a lot and guiding us and making sure we’re taken care of,” Bolls said.

Bolls and his family are now camping out, too, doing their part to help.

“It’s just, let’s make America great again. Man, we’re trying,” Jolly said.
