Shoppers take advantage of Black Friday deals after Thanksgiving

Posted: Updated:

Millions of people hit the stores for the biggest shopping day of the holiday season, and for some the deal hunting continued from Thanksgiving until the early morning on Black Friday.

"I got two iPad minis for two of my kids, saved about $100 each," said Karen Yerbich, a Black Friday shopper.

Yerbich and Stephanie Surratt are friends who love to shop. They started their Black Friday on Thanksgiving in Nashville and didn't sleep for hours.

"Karen and I met out here around 7:45 p.m, we do it every year. And we end up coming home around 5 or 6 a.m.," said Surratt.

About 137 million people across the country hit stores in person and online for Black Friday deals. The National Retail Federation lists TVs and electronics as the big ticket items on the Christmas list.

"I was looking for video games, PS4 games that were half off. We got two iPad minis," Surratt said. "We got remote control corvettes for our boys, doll stuff for our girls."

The pair stuffed their carts and saved big before things ran out.

"Some of the things run out. I was at Michael's yesterday with my sister in law and she wanted a Christmas tree, and they only had three in store and she got one of the three," Yerbich said.

Some shoppers left with a lighter tow of gifts.

"I saved close to $50 on what I would have normally bought for Christmas for my family," said Devon Harmon, a Nashville shopper.

Devon said she used to work in retail, and she knows the efforts workers put in to get the stores ready for the rush throughout the weekend.

"I came in on Thanksgiving night I came in an hour before we opened. So, I came in at 5 p.m. and then I worked through the night until about 3 a.m, went home to sleep for a few hours and then return to Target to return for Black Friday to work another shift," said Harmon. "Just be nice to your cashiers is all I can say."

If you didn't manage to get out and shop over the last two days, many stores will have sales for Small Business Saturday, Sunday and Cyber Monday.
