The school bus involved in a crash on Interstate 65 in Nashville that injured several students on Friday is brand new and was last inspected in June of this year.

According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the bus passed inspection. THP will now be looking at every inch of the bus to try and determine the cause of the crash.

The driver has been identified as Christina Mathis, 28. It is unclear how long she has been with the district and if there have been any issues in the past.

Investigators are looking at speed as a contributing factor.

According to the Chester County School System’s website, bus drivers must be at least 21 years of age, have no criminal background, have a CDL license with school bus and passenger endorsements, and have a current DOT medical card.

The Channel 4 I-Team checked and Mathis has no criminal history.

Cameras are believed to have been on the bus, however there are no seat belts.

School buses are not required by federal guidelines to have seat belts because they weigh more than 10,000 pounds.

THP inspects buses in the state that are under 15 years old once a year. Buses over that get inspected at least twice a year.

Both Metro police and THP are working together on this to determine what caused Mathis to lose control of the bus.

"Once the bus is up-righted it will be towed to the Nashville Police Department impound lot, and there will be further inspections of the bus in the coming days,” said Don Aaron with Metro police. “Again, the Tennessee Highway Patrol is particularly interested in the mechanical condition of this bus."

It’s unclear how long the full inspection of this bus will take. THP officials said it could be days or even weeks until they have all the answers they're looking for.
