COBLE, TN (WSMV) -

A large brush fire in the Coble area of Hickman County caused major damage overnight.

Multiple agencies battled the flames, which ignited at around 5 p.m. Thursday.

Hickman County EMA Director Jim Tanner said they estimate 250 acres were burned in the fire, mostly around Oguin Lane off Hurricane Branch Road. Some spots are still smoldering.

"We know that a tractor caught fire. Unfortunately, we don't know why the tractor itself caught," Tanner said.

They do know why it spread so quickly. Dry conditions have been plaguing Tennessee for weeks.

"When you've got all the dead fall that's in our woods around here and the leaves that's piled up, it just made it like a kiln," Tanner said.

Several residents evacuated on Thursday night, but Tanner said they have since been allowed to return to their homes.

Residents joined firefighters and the forestry department to dig ditches that eventually helped contain the fire.

“My emergency coordinator and myself will remain in contact with our local fire department and with forestry to make sure it doesn’t rekindle or try to get back out of hand,” Tanner said.

Tanner said air quality may be a big problem in the area on Friday.

No one was hurt in the fire and all nearby houses are intact.
