NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Firefighters across the South are struggling to contain wildfires, and the weather isn't helping their cause.

These wildfires are not only taking a toll on land, but also on the air and water.

Percy Priest Lake has seen water recede, bringing muddy rocks coming to the surface.

Air quality has been poor in parts of Tennessee, even putting the Midstate under a health alert. The heavy smoke from the wildfires landed hundreds of people in the hospital in the eastern part of the state.

Army National Guard firefighters continue to fight the wildfires in six states across the Southeast from the air and the ground. It has burned more than 80,000 acres so far.

More than 50 Tennessee counties are under a burn ban right now. These wildfires have been burning for more than a week now.

It has become a statewide effort to fight the wildfires. Brentwood firefighters have been dispatched to East Tennessee to assist crews there.
