Tips to prepare plants for coldest weather of season

Posted: Updated:

The coldest air of the season is on its way toward Middle Tennessee! Most of the Midstate will experience a freeze this weekend.  In spots, it'll be a hard freeze!

There are many things you can do to protect your yard and garden, so they not only weather that, but also the ongoing drought.

Todd Estepp, co-owner of Creekside Garden Center & Landscaping, 106 Harding Place, Belle Meade, provided some tips on Facebook Live to keep your plants safe.

According to Estepp, you'll want to cover sensitive plants with a sheet or box to get through both Saturday night and Sunday night.

At greatest risk are tender vegetation like annuals you planted back in the summer and herbs.

Potted plants that can be brought in should be brought indoors to prevent damage.

Irrigation systems that are still active will be fine as long as the backflow protector is covered or wrapped.

It's not too late to plant either, although for some things, it's a challenge given our ongoing drought.
