NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

An iconic Nashville mural is getting a facelift.

Since 1992, the painting on the side of a building at 28th Avenue and West Avenue has featured the faces of Vanderbilt’s football, baseball, and men’s and women’s basketball coaches.

The basketball coaches, Kevin Stallings and Melanie Balcomb, left this year.

Artist Michael Cooper was on site Wednesday prepping the building to paint the faces of new men’s basketball coach Bryce Drew and women’s basketball coach Stephanie White.

For many Nashvillians, the mural isn’t just a landmark, it’s also a roster.

“It has become what a well-known muralist used to call them, an urban icon. People simply know where the building is based on the mural. You Greek, Me Greek was the original company that sponsored the mural. Even to this day, people will say, ‘It’s on the You Greek, Me Greek building,’” Cooper said.

“I mean, there’s people who will check this wall to see who the latest coach is,” Cooper added.

Cooper said the mural will be finished by the end of the day on Friday, just in time for homecoming.

He also said Vanderbilt doesn’t have anything to do with the paintings. A Vanderbilt alumnus sponsored the latest creation and set up a GoFundMe page to raise the money.

Cooper noted other parts of the mural need updating, but said that will be a separate project.
