Downtown Nashville has a new high-rise hotel open for business on Thursday night.

Just shy of two years after breaking ground, The Westin welcomed its first guests on Thursday.

The hotel will boast the highest rooftop lounge in the city.

However, will these new rooms ease the shortage that’s been driving room prices downtown sky-high?

Convention officials said the new rooms are welcome, but the need is there for even more.

The Westin Nashville may be luxurious, but the rooms won’t be cheap. Don’t be surprised to see $379 per night and higher at the full-service hotel with amenities galore, a spa, restaurant and the highest club in Nashville.

“It’s a one of a kind lounge that’s going to feature a 360-degree view of the city as well as it’s going to be offering live music,” said Kellie Davie with Westin marketing. “There will be DJ nights, Nashville highest infinity pool and weekend brunch too.

City leaders have said a shortage of hotels has been driving up what visitors pay.

Will the 450 new rooms help lower downtown hotel price that are said to be higher now than Boston or Washington, DC?

Not yet, according to the Convention and Visitors Corporation. October is typically the busiest month in Nashville and demand drives prices up.

But help will be coming by next summer, according to the Convention and Visitors Corporation, when 1,500 to 2,000 more new rooms open.

The higher-end hotels like The Westin aren’t likely to drop its prices, but mid-level hotels which have been charging top dollar probably will become less expensive.

“What this will do is allow some of the mid-priced and select service hotels to get back where they really need to be,” said The Westin General Manager Ray Waters. “Nashville’s had a unique situation with the demand coming into the city and everybody’s been at the highest price they could possibly be. This will allow Nashville to help balance that out.”

There are so many new hotels going in downtown that it’s hard to keep up.

Here is a list of new downtown hotels that are currently being developed.
