The Springfield Police Department is searching for a group of men involved in a violent attack outside a Waffle House.

According to Smokey Barn News, a man was attacked by five other men in the parking lot on Memorial Boulevard on Wednesday night.

The Springfield Police Chief told Channel 4 that the victim instigated the brawl. Witnesses said he lost consciousness as he was punched and kicked.

Police said three men in the restaurant came outside to break up the fight.

“According to some statements on the scene, some of the yelling at these individuals were racial in nature,” said Springfield Police Chief David Thompson. “There were some racial slurs used. There were threats back and forth. Sometimes in those cases, things escalate.”

The attackers got away in a gray or silver Chevy Impala and a Nissan Altima.

The man hospitalized has not been able to explain why he decided to jump into the fight.

Thompson said police would like to take to anyone who witnessed or was involved in the fight.

Anyone with information about the assault is asked to call dispatch at 615-384-4911.
