NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A new project at Maplewood High School will serve not only students but the entire East Nashville community.

Mayor Megan Barry, Congressman Jim Cooper and other local leaders helped officials at Saint Thomas Hospital break ground on a new walk-in clinic.

It will be staffed by Saint Thomas physicians, nurse practitioners and medical assistants.

The partnership with Maplewood will provide students hands-on learning in the health care field.

Those students aren’t the ones benefiting. The clinic will also be open to the public.

“The fact that we’re going to be able to have a clinic here and to serve the community as part of this initiative is really key,” said Mayor Megan Barry. “Making sure citizens are healthy starts with having access to health care.”

“Good health care starts with primary care and it starts to have an availability of that care outside of our care hospitals,” said Karen Springer, President and CEO of Saint Thomas Health.

“The more we understand that every opportunity presents itself with a community impact, the more realize that this high school is our high school and the more we participate, the better things get,” said Metro Councilwoman Nancy VanReece.

There will be 101 high school seniors in the program. When they graduate, they will be certified as medical assistants.

The near $500,000 facility should be open by the spring.
