MOUNT JULIET, TN (WSMV) -

An unoccupied police vehicle was struck by another car while officers and firefighters were on the scene of a pickup truck bed fire on Interstate 40 West late Monday afternoon.

Police said four police vehicles and one fire engine responded to the call near the 227 mile marker to handle a fire in the bed of the truck around 4:50 p.m.

While the officer was outside his vehicle and approaching the incident, the vehicle was struck by a car around 5 p.m.

The officer had just exited the vehicle moments before it was struck.

After striking the patrol vehicle, the other car left the roadway and stopped around 450 feet after impact.

The driver of the car was not injured.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol is investigating the accident, per Mount Juliet Police policy of when one of its vehicles is involved in an accident.
