NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

They shake, shimmy and spread the word of self-empowerment.

The Delinquent Debutantes have been putting on burlesque shows from the studio in west Nashville for two years.

The performers have regular jobs. Some are mothers or wives. There’s no criticism or judgment at the Delinquent Debutante’s story. They all believe they’re just beautiful.

“For me in particular, I’ve had a long, love-hate relationship with my body. And I think that goes for a lot of women,” Benita Phoenix said.

Phoenix said burlesque helps her say “I am who I am.”

“Yeah, I’m going to put this not-thin body in front of people as a form of diversifying what you’re seeing and making it OK,” she said.

Freya Potempa brought burlesque classes and performances to the studio two years ago.

The show shoots for sensual, somewhere between a PG-13 and R rating. But for the women and what they feel, Potempa said it’s an A-plus.

“Usually you feel better because you’re focused on I’m shaking this body part, showing it some love. And that’s not normally the way we look at things in the mirror. We point out our flaw and we don’t point out the things we love about ourselves,” Potempa said.

The Delinquent Debutantes offer a six-week class to introduce women to burlesque. Their performances are usually on Saturday night.
