Sheriff Robert Arnold continued to be a hot topic at Monday night’s Rutherford County Commission Safety Committee meeting.

A hearing will be held on Tuesday to consider changing bond conditions for Arnold, who was accused of domestic assault against his wife on Labor Day.

“These are uncharted waters,” said Rutherford County Commissioner Brad Turner. “I don’t think any of us … thought we would be having conversations about … having a sheriff that’s possibly incarcerated, depending on what the judge rules.”

Another question by commissioners at Monday’s meeting was what would the department look like if the sheriff was behind bars after Tuesday’s hearing.

“They will continue to protect their citizens. They’re going to continue to do things. They’re going to continue to take care of the prisoners in the jails and make sure they’re taken care of and cared for as we’re statutorily mandated to do,” said Deputy Chief Keith Lowery. “We’re going to continue taking care and doing our jobs.”

Tuesday’s hearing for Arnold is set for 1:30 p.m. at the federal courthouse in Nashville.
