Budget and Finance Committee discusses police response times

Posted: Updated:

A Metro Council member is speaking out after a Channel 4 I-Team investigation into slow response times to burglar alarms.

Last month, the I-Team reported it has taken police more than one hour to show up to 140 burglary calls.

When Councilman Steve Glover heard those numbers, he brought his concerns to the new chairman at Tuesday’s Budget and Finance Committee meeting.

“I would like to request, chair, that at some point moving forward, we start looking at the budget, and if we need to add additional officers to cut down on response times, that you consider that,” Glover said.

Glover said he was unaware of the response times until the I-Team’s report.

“I think after your investigation, it’s things we need to have a discussion on to determine if they are understaffed. We need to take care of that. I believe it’s the council’s responsibility,” Glover said.

Last month, the I-Team uncovered that between June 2015 and June 2016, it took officers more than 30 minutes to respond to more than 3,000 burglary calls.

When the I-Team took its findings to Metro police, they said sometimes there are more calls than officers available.

Metro Police Chief Steve Anderson said he would like to see another police precinct, but said that will cost money the department currently doesn’t have.

“We are looking to add a ninth precinct. We have eight at this time. That would require 60 new officers,” Anderson said.

Glover said Tuesday’s discussion is the first of many between now and next spring. He wants to see more officers on the streets and more response times less than 20 minutes.

“I think there’s legitimate concern that at times, they’re understaffed,” Glover said.

Glover said the next step is to put this issue on the agenda to further the discussion about just how much more money the department needs.
