Delta Fair ride to re-open after malfunction injures 8

Posted: Updated:

Officials say a ride that hurt eight people at a fair in Memphis could re-open Wednesday after a third-party inspector deemed the device safe to operate.

Saturday, several people on the Moonraker ride at the Delta Fair suffered injuries, including a fractured leg, wrist and collarbone.

The Channel 4 I-Team has been digging into the ride’s history before it arrived at the Delta Fair.

According to state records, the Moonraker’s last inspection was in July. A third-party inspector checked the device in Columbus, OH.

While the report shows no cause for concern, the I-Team discovered that some of the same issues raised in that inspection re-appeared in the report ordered after the incident on Saturday.

In July, some outstanding issues involved worn-out padding for the seats, an entry gate that wasn’t working and two seats that were closed off entirely.

When the ride was checked again on Sunday, an inspector noted the same problems, including two more seats that were closed off.

But nothing on paper could have predicted Saturday’s malfunction.

Fair officials said the ride’s computer detected a problem and started a safety shutdown. The operator then panicked and released the safety belts while the ride was still in the air.

On Sunday, an inspector noted that the computer system was re-programmed so the door and lap bars would not open unless the ride had stopped.

The I-Team reached out to Belle City Amusement, the company that operates the ride. We are still waiting to hear back why those issues in July had not been resolved by this weekend.

A state spokesman said the Moonraker must be re-authorized by the state before it can operate again.
