Jimmy Feigen gets his passport back, permitted to leave Brazil

Posted: Updated:

A Brazilian court statement detailed that because swimmer Jimmy Feigen donated approximately $10,800 to charity for his involvement in the gas station incident, his passport would be returned and he would be free to leave the country.

His passport was seized earlier in the week while police investigated the incident. The police then told media the story was fabricated, saying Lochte, Feigen and two other swimmers vandalized a gas station early Sunday morning after a night of partying and were confronted by armed guards and were not robbed at gunpoint as the swimmers had previously claimed.

Brazilian prosecutors then tried to up the amount of money Feigen should pay to charity, asking that he instead pay $47,000. Feigen was already at the airport.

It is likely that the increased fine won't matter: Feigen is expected to be out of Brazil before a decision on the appeal is made and the fine would only apply if Feigen were to ever return to Brazil.
