Kaori Icho one win away from making history with fourth gold medal

Posted: Updated:

With three wins so far today, Japanese wrestler Kaori Icho has moved into the women's 58kg Gold Medal Match.

On more victory, and she will become the first female in any sport to win an individual-event gold medal at four Olympics.

Icho, who has won three consecutive Olympic titles in women's freestyle wrestling, would also break the record for most wrestling gold medals by anyone – male or female.

It was a dominant showing at times for the 10-time world champion, who only gave up one point to her opponents in her three matches combined. Two of her bouts ended early with a victory by technical fall.

Russia's Valeria Koblova, the world No. 2, will face Icho in the final.

Icho was just one member of the historically-strong Japanese women's wrestling team advancing to a Gold Medal Match today. Three-time reigning world champion Eri Tosaka reached the final round of the 48kg bracket, and world No. 5 Sara Dosho achieved the same feat in the 69kg division.

The U.S. only had one wrestler competing on the day: Haley Augello. Augello rolled to a 7-0 victory over Jessica Blaszka in the Round of 16 before running into Tosaka in the quarterfinals. Although Augello briefly held the lead in the second period, Tosaka stormed back to win the match 11-2. But because Tosaka won her next bout to move into the final, Augello has been pulled into the repechage and will have a shot to wrestle back for a bronze medal during today's final session.

The repechage and medal rounds start at 3 p.m. ET and will stream live on NBCOlympics.com. There will be two mats in use to start the session (Mat B and Mat A) before action moves to just Mat B.
