Katie Taylor loses Rio debut - WSMV News 4

Reigning champ Katie Taylor loses first match

Posted: Updated:

Top-seeded Katie Taylor (IRL), the reigning Olympic champion and 5-time world champion in women’s lightweight (57-60kg), goes down to Mira Potkonen (FIN) in the quarterfinals in a split decision. Taylor, who has been the face of women’s boxing for nearly a decade and the flag bearer for Ireland in the London opening ceremony, will go home without a medal after winning gold in London.

Talyor had some difficulty in qualifying for the Olympics this year, losing two matches in 2016 alone, one of them a semifinal qualification match.

Another upset win sent top seed Muhammad Ali (GBR) home in a loss to Yoel Finol of Venezuela. Team USA boxer Antonio Vargas lost his flyweight round of 16 match to Shakhobidin Zoirov (UZB), eliminating Vargas from medal contention.

Team USA suffered another setback with Mikaela Mayer's defeat in the women's lightweight quarterfinals, which eliminates her from medal contention. With Mayer's elimination, only three boxers from Team USA remain in the tournament for gold in Rio.
