Pernille Blume captured Denmark’s first Olympic gold in the 50m freestyle by racing to 24.07 seconds, beating out Team USA’s Simone Manuel by 0.02 seconds.
Belarus’ Aliaksandra Herasimenia took the bronze, behind Blume’s time by 0.11 seconds.
Both Cate and Bronte Campbell of Australia failed to win a medal in the 100m distance on Thursday and neither landed on the podium in the splash and dash. Cate was in fifth place and Bronte, the 2015 world champion in the 50m freestyle, finished seventh. Ranomi Kromowidjojo of the Netherlands won the 50m freestyle in 2012 but was sixth in Rio.
Manuel raced the 50m freestyle at 9:03 p.m. ET and then anchored the 4x100m medley relay to win a historic gold medal at about 9:50 p.m. ET.
