Playoffs?! How Olympic golf will break medal ties

Posted: Updated:

RIO DE JANEIRO – Playoffs are nothing new in golf, with a dozen events going extra holes this year on the PGA Tour, but overtime this week at the Olympics creates an entirely different scenario.

In the case of ties for any of the top three positions on Sunday – gold, silver or bronze – there will be sudden-death playoffs to determine who wins the medal.

In the case of three or more players tying for first, the playoff will determine the gold medal winner first, and play will continue to determine the silver and bronze afterward.

That scenario is the same for ties for second (silver) and third (bronze), and only one medal for each place will be awarded.

In the event four or more players end up in a single playoff, it is possible one playoff will be split into multiple playoffs. If, for example, two players make birdie on the first extra hole while two others make par, the two players now playing for gold and silver will split off into their own match, leaving the remaining competitors to compete for bronze.

The holes used for the playoff will be Nos. 18, 1 and 17.
