Canada's Abel paces field, both Americans advance to women's 3m semifinal

Despite a pool closure in the morning, the women's individual 3m springboard preliminaries went off without a hitch Friday afternoon at the Maria Lenk Aquatics Center in Rio.

The pace was set by Canada's Jennifer Abel (373.00 points), China's He Zi (367.05 points) and Shi Tingmao (357.55 points) as the top 18 compeitors punched their ticket to the semifinal round, taking place Saturday at 3pm ET.

Both Americans advanced; Abby Johnston placed sixth with 333.60 points while Kassidy Cook placed eighth with 327.75 points.

"I had a really solid performance from start to finish," Johnston said. "I don’t think I had any misses in there. My second dive was my strongest, but everything else, there were no misses and I’m really pleased with it. I feel like I can just get more consistent and stronger from here on out."

"I thought I had a pretty good list," Cook said. "I was scoring within the 6.5, 7, 7.5 range on everything. I ended up in the top eight, which is awesome going into the semifinals."

Abel and partner Pamela Ware, who finished seventh and also advanced to the semifinal, have plenty of motivation. They had a chance to win a medal in the synchronized 3m event, only to come up just short on their final dive and finish fourth.

Italy's Tania Cagnotto, who took silver in the synchronized 3m with partner Dallapé, finished fourth with a score of 347.30. And Australia's Maddison Keene, who won bronze in the synchronized 3m with partner Anabelle Smith, finished ninth with a score of 323.35 to advanced to the semifinal.

Russian Nadezhda Bazhina failed to advance in large part due to a 0.00 score on her disastrous fourth dive, when she almost missed the board on her takeoff and entered the water in a back flop.

Competitors arrived on Friday morning to find the pool closed while it was under treatment for discoloration. Divers were forced into dry training and did not get to practice in the pool until 12pm ET, two and a half hours before the event.

The winner will be decided in the final on Sunday. China has won the women's individual 3m springboard event at every Olympics since 1988, marking seven straight victories.
