Cate Campbell sets new Olympic record in 100m freestyle semifinals

Posted: Updated:

Cate Campbell set the 100m freestyle Olympic record twice Wednesday, both in the afternoon preliminary heats and the evening final.

She raced to 52.71 in the semifinal to lead the pack, where she’ll be joined by her sister Bronte who clocked 53.29. The sisters could be the first siblings to ever share a podium in an individual event; they already shared the podium in the 4x100m freestyle relay earlier in the week where they won gold.

American Simone Manuel won her semifinal heat, just 0.09 seconds off the American record, and will also advance Teammate Abbey Weitzeil made the final in eighth place. Weitzeil and Manuel, both Olympic rookies, were a part of the 4x100m freestyle relay that won silver behind Australia.
