Fowler, Watson dine with divers, watch Phelps win gold

Posted: Updated:

With an entire week to take in all the Olympic activities he can before the men's golf event starts Thursday, Rickie Fowler has become something of an unofficial cheerleader and ambassador for both Team USA and Olympic golf, at large.

The latest stops on his personal fun-times tour came Tuesday night, when he and U.S. teammate Bubba Watson had dinner with U.S. synchronized divers Sam Dorman, David Boudia and Steele Johnson and watched as Michael Phelps took home gold medals in both the 200m butterfly and the 4x200m freestyle relay.

“It’s inspiring to watch fellow U.S. athletes do well, compete, get a medal, gold, whatever it may be,” Fowler said. “And to see what Phelps has done over numerous years and to see what [Katie] Ledecky is doing right now and has done, like I said, it’s inspiring.

“You get chills watching them when they win, when they do well, and it just kind of pushes you to want to do the best that you can.”

Watson, the two-time Masters champion, tees off at 8:14 a.m. ET on Thursday alongside Germany's Martin Kaymer and India's Anirban Lahiri. Fowler will go off at 9:58 with Great Britian's Justin Rose and Venezuela's Jhonattan Vegas. For more featured tee times, click here.
