In another step closer to a rung on the Olympic podium, Team USA boxer Carlos Balderas handily defeated Japan's Daisuke Narimatsu in his second matchup of the Olympics. It is his second victory by unanimous decision.
Balderas goes on to face Cuba's Lazaro Alvarez in the lightweight quarterfinals. A win in the quarterfinals would ensure a medal for both Balderas and Team USA, which has not won a medal in this weight class since the 1996 Atlanta Games.
Alvarez is likely to present a challenge, as he is a former Olympic medalist himself. Alvarez took home the bronze in the 2012 London Games as a bantamweight. He has moved up a weight class since then, and will face Balderas on Friday, August 12.
