France rebounds after loss to beat China in men's hoops

Posted: Updated:

France handles an overmatched Chinese squad to win their first game at the Rio Olympics.

An explosive second quarter powered the French to a 28-point victory over China, 88-60. France outscored China 23-9 in the second period to take a commanding 42-23 lead heading into the half.

Nando de Colo was the high-scorer for France with 19 points, including 11 points in the pivotal second frame. Nic Batum contributed a bit of everything in the win, finishing with seven points, ten rebounds, three assists and a steal, while Tony Parker added 14 points and eight assists.

Rudy Gobert was a force for France on the defensive end, blocking five shots and showing the Rio crowd why he's earned the nickname the French Rejection.

Yi Jianlian had 19 points for China, but he got little help outside of Zhelin Wang, who scored 11.

France got the result they needed after a poor showing against Australia in their first game. France entered the Olympics as a medal favorite, but a 21-point loss to the Aussies put those aspirations in doubt.

France plays Serbia on Wednesday, while China takes on Venezuela.
