Rifle stolen from car of off-duty Rutherford deputy

MURFREESBORO, TN (WSMV) -

A semi-automatic patrol rifle was stolen from an off-duty deputy’s marked patrol car over the weekend, according to a release from the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputy Scott Parker, who lives off Old Jefferson Pike near Smyrna, reported he locked the rifle in his vehicle for safe-keeping while his home, which is for sale, was being shown to potential buyers, according to the release.

Parker discovered the rifle was missing Sunday and notified the Sheriff’s Office.

“Qualified deputies are issued the rifles to protect the citizens of our county, especially during potentially dangerous situations that could affect the safety of residents and law enforcement officers,” said spokeswoman Lisa Marchesoni.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms has been notified since it is a federal crime. The rifle has been entered into the National Crime Information Center database.

The ATF is offering a reward up to $1,500 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the theft. People with information can all the ATF at 1-800-ATF-Guns or Det. Steve Kohler at 615-904-3046.

Rutherford County Crime Stoppers is also offering a reward up to $1,000 for the arrest and prosecution of the suspect. People may call Crime Stoppers at 615-893-STOP between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The Sheriff’s Office is conduction an internal review to determine if weapon storage policies were followed in this situation, according to the news release.
