Two time Olympic medalist Paddy Barnes won't be adding another medal to his collection. The Irish boxer was eliminated in an upset by Spain’s Carmona Heredia on day three of Olympic boxing. Heredia will go on to face Columbia’s Yuberjen Martinez in the quarterfinals.
Top ranked Cuban boxer Joahanys Argilagos ended Britain’s Galal Yafai’s hopes of medaling in the round of 16. Cuba is always a big contender in men’s boxing and it looks like this year will be no different.
In perhaps the biggest upset of the day, American boxer Nico Hernandez defeated top ranked Vasilii Egorov by unanimous decision. Hernandez now moves on to the Wednesday quarterfinals, where he will face Carlos Quipo Pilataxi (Ecuador).
A win in the quarterfinals would give Hernandez both a place in the semifinals, and a guarentee of medaling at least bronze in the light fly division.
Not all of the day was as dramatic. One boxer and his corner managed to have even more fun with their already fun victory.
Kenya’s Peter Warui won over China’s Lv Bin to the great joy of his corner. He is the second of the Kenyan boxing delegation to win their first fights in Rio.
