Day 3: Beach volleyball preview

Entering Day 3, all teams will have one beach volleyball match under their belts and the race to top their pools is on. In order to advance to the Round of 16, teams must finish among the top two of their pools. 



Women’s preliminary: Forrer/Verge-Depre (SUI) vs. Artacho del Solar/Laird (AUS)
9:00 a.m. ET

Both teams lost in their first match of the preliminary round. Forrer/Verge-Depre lost to China’s Wang/Yue while Australia’s Artacho del Solar/Laird fell to USA’s Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross. 


Women’s preliminary: Agatha/Barbara (BRA) vs. Gallay/Klug (ARG)
10:00 a.m. ET 

Brazil’s Agatha and Barbara won their first match against Hermannova/Slukova (CZE) 19-21, 21-17, 15-11. Argentinians Gallay/Klug were swept by Elsa/liliana of Spain 21-11, 21-19. The Brazilians are heavy favorites to top their pool. 


Men’s preliminary: Losiak/Kantor (POL) vs. Liamin/Barsouk (RUS)
11:00 a.m. ET

Losiak/Kantor topped German’s Bockermann/Fluggen while Liamin/Barsouk fell to Brouwer/Meeuwsen of the Netherlands. 


Men’s preliminary: Herrera/Gavira (ESP) vs. Jefferson/Cherif (QAT)
12:00 p.m. ET

Spaniards Herrera/Gavira won their first match of preliminary play against Austria’s Huber/Seidl. Qatar's Jefferson/Cherif fell to USA’s Gibb/Patterson 21-16, 21-16.


Men’s preliminary match: Alison/Bruno Schmidt vs. Doppler/Horst (AUT)
2:30 p.m. ET

Brazilian duo Alison and Bruno Schmidt will start the afternoon session, taking on Austria’s Doppler/Horst. Alison/Bruno Schmidt played Canada’s Binstock/Schachter, narrowly beating the pair in straight sets 21-19, 22-20. Doppler/Horst fell in the first match of the Rio Olympic beach volleyball tournament against Carambula/Ranghieri (ITA) 21-14, 21-14.


Men’s preliminary: Gibb/Patterson (USA) vs. Huber/Seidl (AUT)
3:30 p.m. ET

USA’s Gibb/Patterson topped Qatar in their first match of preliminary play.  Austria’s Huber/Seidl were beat by Spain’s Herrera/Gavira. 


Women’s preliminary: Meppelink/van Iersel (NED) vs. Alfaro/C.Charles (CRC)
4:30 p.m. ET

Dutch duo Madelein Meppelink and Marleen van Iersel topped Venezuela in their first round of preliminary play. The Costa Rican women lost to Australia’s Bawden/Clancy. 


Men’s preliminary: Brouwer/Meeuwsen (NED) vs. Bockermann/Fluggen (GER)
5:30 p.m. ET

Second-seeded Brouwer/Meeuwsen bested Russia’s Liamin/Barsouk on Day 1 of the Olympic beach volleyball tournament while Bockermann/Fluggen fell to Poland’s Losiak/Kantor 21-11, 23-21. 


Men’s preliminary: Carambula/Ranghieri (ITA) vs. Binstock/Schachter (CAN)
8:00 p.m. ET

Italy’s Carambula/Ranghieri kick off the evening session against Canada’s Binstock/Schachter. The Italians earned a 21-14, 21-12 win in the first match of the Rio Games. The Canadian men fell to top-seeded Brazilians and will look to net their first win to increase their odds of advancing out of pool play. 


Women’s preliminary: Elsa/Liliana (ESP) vs. Hermannova/Slukova (CZE)
9:00 p.m. ET

Spain’s Elsa/Liliana won their first match of preliminary play against Argentina's Gallay/Klug.The Czech women fell to Brazil’s Agatha/Barbara. As it’s likely that the Brazilians will top pool play to advance to the Round of 16, expect to see a fierce battle for the second Pool B spot. 


Women’s preliminary: Bawden/Clancy (AUS) vs. Pazo/Agudo (VEN)
10:00 p.m. ET

The Australian women, who kicked off the women’s preliminary tournament on Saturday, enter this match with one win under their belt. The Venezuelan women, however, fell to sixth-seeded Madelein Meppelink and Marleen van Iersel. 


Women’s preliminary: Walsh Jennings/Ross (USA) vs. Wang/Yue (CHN)
11:00 p.m. ET

USA’s Walsh Jennings and Ross will, once again, close the day’s matches at midnight, Rio time. Both the U.S. and Chinese women boast a first match win.
