Recap: Day two of Olympic Boxing

Posted: Updated:

Boxers from all around the world continued to swing the sport into action today, adding the debuting welterweight division to the lineup, alongside the continuing brackets of the lightweight and light heavyweight divisions. Enrico La Cruz of the Netherlands faced off against Chinese Taipei’s Lai Chu-En in the first match of the day. La Cruz narrowly defeated Chu-En by split decision. He goes on the next round of preliminaries on Tuesday.

In another notable fight of the day, 2012 Olympic medalist Andrey Zamkovoy (RUS) was defeated by Rayton Okwiri (KEN) via split decision. Kenya’s Thadius Katua, 18-years-old and the youngest boxer to qualify for the Rio Olympics, put up an admirable performance, but still lost his match to Russian lightweight veteran Adlan Abdurashidov.

Check out the results from today's sessions.

Later on in the night, professional boxer Amnat Ruenroeng (Thailand), one of only three pros to compete in the Rio Games following the AIBA rule change, won his matchup against Argentina’s Ignacio Perrin, backed by an enthusiastic fandom cheering him on throughout.
