Men's preliminary: Samoilovs/Smedins (LAT) vs. Schalk/Saxton (CAN)

Latvia's Samoilovs/Smedins closed out Day 2 of the Rio Olympic beach volleyball tournament with a 21-17, 18-21, 15-13 victory over Canada's Schalk/Saxton.
Men's preliminary: Semenov/Krasilnikov (RUS) vs. Fijalek/Prudel (POL)

Russia's Semenov/Krasilnikov swept Fijalek/Prudel in straight sets 21-14, 21-13.
Women's preliminary: Menegatti/Giombini (ITA) vs. Broder/Valjas (CAN)

In a suprising fashion, Italian duo Marta Menegatti and Laura Giombini took the first set 21-15. The pair began their partnership less than a week ago after Menegatti's initial partner, Viktoria Osi Toth, was disqualified from the Olympics after testing positive for a banned substance. Canada came back to win the second set 21-18. Despite their best efforts, the Italian women were unable to regain the momentum they held in the first set. Broder/Valjas won the match 15-21, 21-18, 15-9.
Women's preliminary: Borger/Buthe (GER) vs. Heidrich/Zumkehr (SUI)

Switzerland's Heidrich/Zumkehr led early in the first set, holding a six-point lead at 12-6. Heidrich/Zumker took the first set 21-12. They returned to take the second set, winning their first preliminary match 21-12, 21-16.
Women's preliminary: Ludwig/Walkenhorst (GER) vs. Elghobashy/Nada (EGY)

Germany's Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst swept Egypt in straight sets 21-12, 21-15.
Men's preliminary: Pedro Solberg/Evandro (BRA) vs. Diaz/Gonzalez (CUB)

Pedro Solberg/Evandro gave passionate hometown fans quite the show. Battling against Cuba, the Brazilian men responded to keep the score tied through the duration of the match until Cuban men barely managed to pull ahead, winning the first set 24-22. In a similar fashion to the first set, both teams responded to keep a tie until the Brazilians won the second set 23-21. Diaz/Gonzalez finished the match to win 24-22, 21-23, 15-13.
Men's preliminary: Dalhausser/Lucena (USA) vs. Naceur. Ma/ Balhaj. C (TUN)

The U.S. men took an early three-point lead in the first set. The pair managed to build a point gap that the Tunisian men could not overcome to quickly take the first set 21-7. Tunisa took the lead at 4-3 in the second set but an unforced error tied the teams at 4-4. Dalhausser and Lucena managed to pulled away after 6-6 to lead 10-7 going into Tunisia's timeout. An ace serve, followed by a block at the net from Naceur, brought the Tunisian men within a point of the Americans. U.S. men lead 11-10 as they entered a technical timeout. The U.S. men pulled away to win the match 21-7, 21-13.
Women's preliminary: Pavan/Bansley (CAN) vs. van Gestel/van der Vlist (NED)

Fifth-seeded Canadians Pavan/Bansley took the first set 21-15 over 22-seed van Gestel/van der Vlist. They swept the second set to win the match 21-15, 21-17.
Men's preliminary: Nummerdor/Varenhorst (NED) vs. Grimalt M./Grimalt E.
12:00 p.m. ET
2015 World Championship silver medalists Nummerdor/Varenhorst took on Chilean cousins Marco and Esteban Grimalt. Nummerdor/Varenhorst took the first set 21-16. In a quick second set, Netherlands won the match 21-16, 21-13.
Men's preliminary: Nicolai/Lupo (ITA) vs. Virgen/Ontiveros (MEX)
11:00 a.m. ET
Italians Nicolai/Lupo took the first set 21-14, boasting five blocks and one ace to best the Mexican men. Virgen/Ontiveros came back to take the second set 21-14, forcing a third. 17th-seeded Mexico won the final set to win the match 14-21, 21-14, 15-11.
Women's preliminary: Fendrick/Sweat (USA) vs. Kolosinska/Brzostek (POL)
10:00 a.m. ET
In their Olympic debut, Brooke Sweat and Lauren Fendrick took an early lead against the Polish women. The U.S. women managed to keep an upperhand, their strength and strategy proving too much for Kolosinska/Brzostek. Fendrick/Sweat took the first set 21-14. Poland responded in the second set, at one point leading 12-4. The Polish women swept the second set 21-13. Kolosinska/Brzostek took an early lead in the decision making set and took the match 14-21, 21-13, 15-7.
Women's preliminary: Larissa/Talita (BRA) vs. Ukolova/Birlova (RUS)

Brazilian favorites Larissa and Talita kicked off the action on Day 2 of the Rio Olympic beach volleyball tournament. The Brazilian managed five aces in the first set, easily winning 21-14. Brazil took the match to win 21-14, 21-16.
