Men's 56kg and women's 53kg weightlifting recap

Men's 56kg group A


 


6:28 PM


Le Quic Toan Tran has set the bar towards the middle of the snatch segment with a 121kg lift. He could not convert a 123kg lift on his next attempt.

Gold medal favorite Om Yun-Col took over first place with a 128kg snatch, forcing the rest of the weight class to up their

Kazakstan's Arli Chontey claimed first for a minute with a 130kg snatch before Vietnam's Kim Tuan Thach also lifted 130kg, taking over first by virtue of lighter body weight.

Leads aren't lasting very long in this weight class. . . Long Qingquan, Om Yun-Col and Kruaithong completed their attempts at 132kg.

Om regains the lead with a 134kg snatch.

Long puts the pressure on Om heading into the clean and jerk by tying an Olympic snatch record at 137kg


Women's 53kg group A


Weightlifting isn't just a game of strength, and the women's 53kg group A proved just that. 


Despite setting an Olympic record in the snatch, gold medal favorite Li Yajun missed on all three attempts at the clean and jerk. Chinese Tapei's Hsu Shu-Ching, on the other hand, played it safe in her first clean and jerk (112kg/246.9 lbs) en route to a 212kg (467.3 lbs) total and Chinese Taipei's first weightlifting gold medal.


Hidilyn Diaz wins the silver (first medal for the Philipines) with a total of 200kg (440.9 lbs) and Yoon Jin Hee takes the bronze with a total of 199kg (438.7 lbs)

Dewi Safitri of Indonesia kicks off the afternoon session.

Brazilian lifter Rosane Dos Reis Santos comes out to a huge ovation from the hometown crowd before converting an 85kg lift (187.3 lbs)

Already successful at 88kg (194.0lbs), Yoon Jin Hee was unable to take possession of the lead with a lift of 90kg (198.4 lbs).


3:00 PM


After passing Yoon in the hallway, Latvia's Rebeka Koha successfully completed a 90kg (198.4 lbs) snatch, taking the lead.


3:03PM


Brazil's Dos Reis Santos also completed a 90kg (198.4) lift. That lands her in second place for the time being. . . 


3:04 PM


90kg looked like a key weight to this point in the 53kg weight class. That was until Chinese Tapei's Hsu Shu-Ching stepped up to the weights. She easily lifted 92kg (202.8 lbs), then took control with a 96kg (211.6 lbs) snatch.


3:10 PM


Her lead was short-lived. Li Yajun of China completed a 98kg (216.0 lbs) snatch in her first attempt. She then completed a 101kg (222.6 lbs) snatch for a new Olympic record. She attempted a new world record (104kg/229.2 lbs) in her third snatch, but couldn't complete the lift. She holds the lead after the snatch with Hsu (100kg) in second.

We're on to the clean and jerk. 18-year-old Koha of Latvia takes over first place with a 107kg clean and jerk.


3:38 PM


Yoon Jin Hee is now on top of the leaderboard after a 110kg clean and jerk

First place was Hidilyn Diaz's for a moment after a 111kg (244.7 lbs) lift in her first attempt at the clean and jerk. But Yoon of Korea lifted 111kg, then Hsu of Chinese Taipei completed a 112kg clean and snatch.


3:45 PM


Diaz clinches a medal with a 112kg (246.9 lbs) in her second attempt at the clean and snatch. She finishes with a 200kg (440.9 lbs) total.


3:50 PM


After an Olympic record in the snatch, Li Yajun - the gold medal favorite - bombs out in the clean and jerk. Chinese Tapei's Hsu Shu-Ching will take the gold with Hidilyn Diaz and Yoon Jin Hee taking silver and bronze respectively.


 


Men's 56kg group B


Luis Alberto Garcia Brito of the Dominican Republic set the bar high in group B after the snatch, lifting 118kg (260.1 lbs).


10:39 AM


Garcia Brito followed his 118kg (260.1 lbs) snatch up with a clean and jerk of 145kg (319.6 lbs). That gives him a total of 263kg (579.8 lbs), leading the men's 56kg at the conclusion of group B.


11:30 AM


After a break women's 53kg is set to get underway.


 


Women's 53kg group B


12:05 PM


Japan's Kanae Yagi leads the women's 53kg group B after the snatch with a 81kg (178.5 lbs) lift. Evagjelia Veli of Albania is in second with 75kg (165.3 lbs).


12:46 PM


Kanae Yagi completes a clean and jerk of 105kg (231.4 lbs). She leads the 53kg at the conclusion group B with a total of 186kg (410.06 lbs).
