Recap: Women's team archery round of 16

Posted: Updated:

Like the men's team competition yesterday, the four top seeds from the women's team archery ranking round - South KoreaChinese Taipei, the People's Republic of China, and Russia - received a bye into the quarterfinals and didn't have to compete this morning.

The first Round of 16 match, however, was between Mexico, who narrowly missed a bye, finishing fifth in the ranking round, and Georgia, who finished 12th. Mexico came out shooting strong, winning 6-0 and moving on to a match against Chinese Taipei in the quarterfinals.

Japan and Ukraine were up next. Ukraine won the first set, but Japan came back to win the next three, taking the match 6-2 and setting up a meeting with the gold medal favorite, South Korea, later this afternoon.

The third match of the morning pitted host nation, Brazil, who entered the range to loud applause, against Italy, who had a good showing in the ranking round, finishing right behind Mexico. Brazil put up a good fight, but Italy was just dominant, winning in straight sets and by a combined 14 points. Italy will have a chance to shoot against China this afternoon for a spot in the semifinals.

India, led by Deepika Kumari, and Colombia comprised the final match of the morning. After the second set, the score was tied 3-3, with Colombia looking for the upset. A miss-shot by Colombia's Carolina Aguirre resulted in a 3, however, solidifying the win and a match-up with Russia later today.

Coverage of the quarterfinals, semifinals and medal matches will begin at 1PM ET.
