Great Britain pulled off a 2-1 upset victory over Australia in a key matchup of day one’s preliminary round.
"It's a good three points. It was not pretty at times, but we were disciplined. Australia are a fantastic side," Great Britain player kate Richardson-Walsh said. "They've got strength all over the field and I think they'll do really well in this tournament, so I think to come out and get a win against them is a good confidence booster."
Both teams remained scoreless after the first quarter and most of the second. With four minutes left until halftime, Great Britain’s Lily Owsley knocked one in goal to give her team the lead over the medal favorites.
Australia answered entering the third quarter to tie it all up. Georgina Morgan took the shot off of the penalty corner and executed for the Hockeyroos.
Great Britain kept up its strong attack. With two minutes left in the quarter, Alex Danson put her team back ahead by one goal.
Australia had some chances to tie it back up in the fourth quarter, particularly on a penalty corner with just under two minutes left in the game. Great Britain goalkeeper Maddie Hinch spoiled all attempts, continuing her stellar play in the net.
"Obviously disappointed to start with a loss but I think the standard we set was pretty good and we obviously want to improve each game so I think that's probably a good place to start," Morgan said.
Although this wraps up day one of play in Rio, this is only the first of five games these teams will play in the preliminary round. Both teams will resume play on Monday.
