It came down to the final seconds, but Japan survived Belarus 77-73 in their opening game of the women's Olympic basketball tournament.
Japan's Mika Kurihara scored a game-high 20 points in the winning effort. Ramu Tokashiki added 16 points of her own to go along with one assist, four rebounds, one steal and one block.
Belarus kept it close up until the final buzzer, even hitting a late three-pointer to cut the deficit to two with 14 seconds remaining, but just could not pull even.
Belarus will get back after it on Sunday, while Japan gets an extra day to rest and will face the host nation Monday.
