Boudia: Varying conditions give Team USA 'huge advantage' over diving field

Posted: Updated:

Olympic diving events begin on Sunday at the outdoor Maria Lenk Aquatic Center and veteran American diver David Boudia believes the 10 members of Team USA have a significant leg up on the competition.

"I think this team is so well prepared," Boudia said. "We've been in these conditions before. We wen't to Fort Lauderdale in January when it was 55 degrees and windy and rainy. So we've been in this type of setting and we have a huge advantage over the rest of the field."

Olympic diving this year returns to an outdoor facility for the first time since the 1992 Barcelona Games 24 years ago.

Barra da Tijuca, the Rio neighborhood in which the diving events will take place, is expected to see drastic fluctuations in weather conditions over the next 10 days, according to Weather.com -- a low of 63 and a high of 92 with rain and sun and wind up to 17 miles per hour.

We have a huge advantage over the rest of the field.

Boudia, the reigning gold medalist in the men's individual 10m platform event, will first compete in the men's synchronized 10m platform event alongside partner Steele Johnson on Monday, Aug. 8 at 3pm.

The 27-year-old then has 10 days off before beginning his title defense in the individual platform on Friday, Aug. 19 at 3pm.
