Sarah Menezes won't defend Olympic judo title, could still win Brazil's first medal

Posted: Updated:

Judo was one of the first sports to kick off the 2016 Olympics, with early-round action in the men's 60kg and women's 48kg divisions taking place in Carioca Arena 2.

Saturday morning featured preliminary rounds in both classes up through the quarterfinals. The tournaments will culminate in the final block later this afternoon, starting at 2:30 p.m. ET. NBCOlympics.com will live stream that final session, which will feature the repechage, semifinals and medal matches.

Many Brazilians will be following closely, as this event could produce the host nation's first medal of the Olympic Games. Sarah Menezes won't defend her Olympic title from 2012 though -- she was upset by Cuba's Dayaris Mestre in the quarterfinals. Entering the match, Menezes was ranked No. 4 in the world, while Mestre was ranked No. 17.

Menezes will still have a shot at a medal but must first defeat Mongolia's Urantsetseg Munkhbat in the repechage in order to get to the Bronze Medal Match. Munkhbat, the No. 1 seed in the tournament, was also upset in the quarterfinals.

One of the most dramatic moments came from Brazil's male entry in today's tournament. In the Round of 32, world No. 14 Felipe Kitadai was trailing France's Walide Khyar (by virtue of having more shidos) as the clock approached zero. But with seven seconds left in the match, Kitadai managed to score a winning yuko -- much to the delight of the Brazilian crowd, and the disgust of Khyar.

Kitadai was later defeated in the quarterfinals, but like his compatriot Menezes, will have a shot at competing for bronze later this afternoon.

Below are the matches coming up in the final block later today. The numbers below correspond to each athlete's world ranking, as of May 30.
