Men's preliminary: Losiak/Kantor (POL) vs. Bockermann/Fluggen (GER)
Poland's Losiak/Kantor took the first set 21-11. The Polish men took an early lead in the second set while Germany trailed close behind. Losiak/Kantor took the second and final set to win 21-11, 23-21.
Women's preliminary: Meppelink/Van Iersel (NED) vs. Pazo/Agudo (VEN)
Both teams, seemingly equally matched, maintained a tie throughout the majority of the first set. At 15-15, the Dutch women managed to pull away to win the first set 21-17. Meppelink/Van Iersel took the second set to win 21-17, 21-11.
Men's preliminary: Brouwer/Meeuwsen (NED) vs. Liamin/Barsouk (RUS)
Brouwer/Meeuwsen of the Netherlands won their first preliminary match 21-15, 21-14 against Russia's Liamin/Barsouk. Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen began playing in 2011. Their breakout season came in 2013 when they won the FIVB World Championships.
Men's preliminary: Patterson/Gibb (USA) vs. Jefferson/Cherif (QAT)
U.S. beach volleyball duo Casey Patterson and Jake Gibb took on Qatar's Jefferson/Cherif in their first match of the men's preliminary round. Patterson made his third consecutive Games appearance while his partner, Casey Patterson, made his Olympic debut. The pair took the first set 21-16. Patterson and Gibb took an early lead in the second set and maintained a point gab that Qatar struggled to fill. The U.S. men took their first preliminary match 21-16, 21-16.
Women's preliminary: Agatha/Barbara (BRA) vs. Hermannova/Slukova (CZE)
2:30 p.m. ET
Brazilian beach volleyball duo Agatha and Barbara were the first women's host country team to play on the Copacabana venue. Every point the Brazilians scored was awarded with roaring cheers from local fans. Despite the presure, Hermannova/Slukova managed to keep up with Agatha/Barbara, trailing close behind. Hermannova/Slukova bested the Brazilians to take the first set 21-19.
The intensity of the first set fueled the pressure in the second. Where Agatha/Barbara had power, Hermannova/Slukova made up with quick strategy. Brazil held a three-point lead at 18-15 which they maintained to win the second set 21-17.
The Brazilians, riding on the momentum of their second set victory, took the final set to win 21-19, 17-21, 15-11.
Women's preliminary: Elsa/Liliana (ESP) vs. Gallay/Klug (ARG)
12:00 p.m. ET
Spain's Elsa and Liliana took an early lead in the first set and managed to keep their distance from Argentina's Gallay/Klug, finishing the first set 21-11. Teams tied at 6-6 in the second set with both responding until Argentina managed to pull away to take the lead at 15-13. Spain came back to tie at 19-19 before cruising through Argentina to win 21-19.
Women's preliminary: Bawden/Clancy (AUS) vs. Alfaro/C.Charles (CRC)

The first women's preliminary beach volleyball match saw three of the four players make their Olympic debuts. Australia's Taliqua Clancy made her debut along side veteran Louise Bawden (2000, 2012). On the opposite side of the net, Costa Rican duo Alfaro/C.Charles not only made their debut as individuals but also as a nation -- their match marked the first time a beach volleyball team has represented Costa Rica at the Olympic Games. The Australian women bested the Costa Ricans to win 21-15, 21-14.
Men’s preliminary: Alison/Bruno Schmidt (BRA) vs. Binstock/Schachter (CAN)
10:00 a.m. ET
Although the Brazilian men are heavy favorites for gold, the Canadians proved they were ready to play. Binstock and Schachter were quick to respond to keep the tie scored for the first several points of the first match. Hometown fans were just a fierce as the players -- audible yelling could be heard as the Canadians prepared to serve. Brazil took the first set 21-19.
The second set proved to be just as exciting as the the first, with the Canadiens trailing Brazil ever-so-slightly. Brazil took the second set to win the match with a final score of 21-19, 22-20.
Men’s preliminary: Carambula /Ranghieri (ITA) vs. Doppler/Horst (AUT)

The men took to the sand first to kick off the Rio Olympic beach volleyball tournament. The Italian men took both sets to win 21-14, 21-12.
