Shields, Stevenson move on to next round in Rio

Posted: Updated:

Team USA boxer Shakur Stevenson was given a first round bye in the AIBA draw. Stevenson now automatically moves on to the next rounds of matches without having to face anyone in the preliminary round.

In addition to Stevenson, Claressa Shields, the reigning champion in her division and the only Team USA boxing gold medalist, was also awarded a bye and moves on the quarterfinals.

The AIBA livetweeted the announcement of the Olympic boxing draw, which shows the matchup via country and not by athlete. Since Stevenson is the only USA athelete in the bantamweight divison (56 kg), he is the United States athlete awarded the bye.

Other noteable byes include British favorite Muhammed Ali, who was awarded a bye in the flyweight division.
