NFL punter Johnny Hekker tries water polo

Posted: Updated:

Water polo players are some of the best athletes in the world. They have to be in order to tread water for entire games while withstanding abuse from opponents underwater. Even professional athletes in other sports are finding that water polo is anything but easy.

Los Angeles Ram punter Johnny Hekker learned that the hard way recently when he got between the posts and tried his hand at goalkeeper while friends threw shots his way.

The results weren't great. Hekker failed to stop the first shot, and lucked out by having the second go over the goal.

His efforts didn't go unnoticed by the U.S. water polo team. USA Water polo tweeted "Good job, good effort."

U.S. Women's goalkeeper Sami Hill also responded, tweeting "Brave of you to try Goalie, buuut you may need to work on your high corners."

Hekker isn't the first in the NFL to give water polo a try. Earlier this year Carolina Panther's quarterback Cam Newton posted a photo on Instagram of him in the pool. No word on if Newton had better luck than his NFL colleague.
