Brazil puts three goals past China to win its opener

Posted: Updated:

Host country Brazil faced off against China in Group E play at the Olympic Stadium in Rio. It proved to be a straightfoward match for Brazil as the hosts topped China 3-0.

Early on in the first half, Brazil was the aggressor. In the 14th minute, a volley attempt from Brazil’s Cristiane forced Chinese goalkeeper Lina Zhao into a diving save.

Brazil opened the scoring in the 36th minute by a header from Monica. Following a free kick from Marta, the ball fell to Monica who headed it past three Chinese defenders to find the back of the net.

China opened the second half strong holding more possession against the Brazilians, but could not turn that possession into a goal.

In the 59th minute, Brazil made China pay by doubling its lead through an Andressa Alves goal. Marta made a darting run to the end line and crossed in the ball to Alves who shot past Zhao.

Cristiane scored in the 90th minute off a free kick to cap off the win for Brazil. With the goal, Cristiane adds to her record total of Olympic goals. She now has 13 at the Games.

Brazil joins Sweden atop Group E with three points while China remains at 0 points.

Brazil plays its second group stage game on Saturday at 9:00p.m. against Sweden while China takes on South Africa at 6:00p.m.
