FiftyForward offers activities for seniors of all ages

Posted: Updated:

FiftyForward is a nationwide nonprofit organization committed to anyone that has moved into or well beyond their first 50 years of life.

In Davidson and Williamson counties, seven full-time centers exist to keep seniors active, educated and entertained.

A smile in the right direction is all it takes for Nashville’s Kelsey Mahaffey to feel she’s doing her job at the FiftyForward center in Madison.

It’s her way to respond to the loneliness she sees in the eyes of people that surround her every day.

That’s life as executive director at the senior center.

“It’s as simple as a hello, it’s a good morning, John or Sue. How are you today?” Mahaffey said. “We’ve got a lot of people that are lonely and don’t get that.”

For $120 a year, seniors get access to more than 100 activities and programs.

“People in their 50s don’t want to do the same thing as people in their 90s, so we’ve got to offer a wide variety of programs,” Mahaffey said.

Reggie Drew brings his mother here and then sticks around.

“I just like hanging around with old people. I learned to play cards with old people. I learned to play pool off of old people,” Drew said.

Mahaffey lived with her grandmother as a teenager. She believes age brings wisdom.

“There’s things in life they’ve experienced, you can gain from them just having a conversation with them, playing a game of cards with them. Just that wisdom is incredible,” she said.
