Swimmers train all over the country all day, every day before coming together as the U.S. Olympic team for the 2016 Rio Games. Here’s what they’re doing on a day-to-day basis at the height of their training regimens:
Katie Ledecky wakes up at 4 a.m., in time to get to practice; she swims from 5 to 7 a.m.
Connor Jaeger wakes up and has a snack at 5:20 a.m.
Conor Dwyer wakes up at 5:10 a.m. to get to his first swim workout at 6 a.m.
Jaeger is in the water for his first practice from 6 to 8 a.m.
Simone Manuel wakes up at 6 a.m. to be at practice by 6:15 a.m.
Elizabeth Beisel wakes up and has breakfast at 7:15 a.m.
Open water swimmer Haley Anderson has her first practice from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m.
Cammile Adams wakes up at 7 a.m. to get to her morning practice, held from 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.
From 8-10 a.m., Beisel is in the water for her first practice of the day. She also tries to use a foam roller and stretch after every work out.
Between 8:30 a.m. and 2:20 p.m., Manuel is in class at Stanford.
Maya DiRado finishes her first pool practice at 8 a.m. and heads home to take a nap.
Nathan Adrian swims from 6 to 8 a.m. and makes sure he gets a nap from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
Anderson has a gym workout from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Missy Franklin finishes her first swim practice of the day at 10 a.m.
Katie Meili lifts weights with her team for an hour between 10 and 11 a.m., and then the team often eats lunch together.
Three days per week, Ledecky has a dry land workout from 11 a.m. to noon.
Franklin spends from 11 a.m. to noon in the weight room.
Beisel takes a workout class from noon to 1 p.m.
Adrian gets in more training from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m.
Dwyer spends from 1 to 2 p.m. in the weight room.
Beisel has a second swim practice from 2 to 5 p.m.
DiRado has a weight lifting session, followed by a second swim practice. Usually, that one incorporates more weights or parachutes strapped to her body for extra resistance.
Franklin has her second swim practice of the day from 3 to 5 p.m.
Adams spends an hour in the weight room.
Anderson finishes her afternoon practice by 4 p.m.
Dwyer also wraps his second daily swim session up at 4 p.m.
Around 5:30 p.m., Beisel has dinner, relaxes and prepares for the next day.
Adams finishes up her second daily swim practice at 7 p.m.
Meili eats dinner, gets into bed and watches a documentary or something interesting on Netflix before going to sleep by 10 p.m.
Manuel gets to bed around 10 p.m., after eating dinner and squeezing in some homework.
Jaeger hits the hay and preps for the next day.
