Posted: Updated:

The 2016 Rio Olympics mark 20 years of women’s Olympic soccer. In the five Olympics that the sport has been contested, the U.S. has won four gold medals and one silver.

Some of the game’s best, including Mia Hamm, Kristine Lilly, Abby Wambach and Carli Lloyd have suited up for the U.S. and contributed to the team’s success.

This summer, the U.S. is looking to win its fourth straight Olympic gold medal. It will be challenged by France, Germany and Australia among others as the teams play throughout the soccer-crazed nation of Brazil.

The U.S. begins its quest for gold on Wednesday against New Zealand at 6:00 p.m. The match will be streamed live on NBCOlympics.com.
