What to Watch: Olympic men's soccer starts on August 4

One day ahead of the Opening Ceremony, the men’s soccer competition begins with eight games. 

Host nation Brazil, led by their electric forward Neymar, square off on the pitch against South Africa at 3:00 pm ET.

Also, on NBC at 8 pm ET/PT, watch the one-hour Rio Olympics preview special hosted by Bob Costas and featuring some of the most recognizable Olympians in Rio including Michael Phelps, Katie Ledecky, Kerri Walsh Jennings and Usain Bolt. NBC Olympics will introduce the U.S. audience to Rio de Janeiro, and will address all of the concerns leading up to the first Olympic Games held in South America.

Defending Olympic gold medalists Mexico come to Rio as the team that spoiled Brazil’s run at gold in 2012.  In 2016, they open with Germany, one of the top soccer nations in the world.  This is one of the most anticipated early round matchups.

Men’s Soccer: Portugal vs. Argentina

Two elite teams from different ends of the globe face off on the pitch looking to open their Olympic run with a win.
