U.S. men’s water polo team defeat Montenegro in Houston before departing for Rio Olympics

Posted: Updated:

The U.S. men’s water polo team won their final game on home soil before departing for the 2016 Rio Olympics. They defeated Montenegro 10-9 at the University of Houston on Saturday.

Team captain Tony Azevedo, who was born in Rio, scored the game winner with 1:24 left in the fourth quarter. A save from goalkeeper McQuin Baron sealed the deal for the U.S.

Azevedo and Luca Cupido led the team in scoring with three goals apiece. Bret Bonanni scored twice, while Thomas Dunstan and Josh Samuels each contributed one goal. Splitting time in the goal, 2008 Olympic silver medalist Merrill Moses made five saves to match Baron’s five saves.

Two-time Olympic gold medalist Gail Devers, who won the 100m on the track at the 1992 and 1996 Olympics, was on hand to perform the ceremonial opening sprint ball drop.

The U.S. men open their Olympic tournament on August 6 against Croatia.
